Kedarnath temple, nestled in the foothills of the Himalaya is an isolated and holy yatra. It holds significant spiritual value in the Hindu tradition, and is one of the Chota Char Dham – four Uttarakhand pilgrimage sites. Its origins are unclear, misted by time and Hindu mythology. However, its history is known to stretch back at least as far as the 8th century A.D. and was, for a time, an abode of Shiva, principle Hindu deity.

The temple’s exterior has white marble, which symbolizes peace and harmony. Five priests share the role of rawal, head priest.

Mountain Magic at Kedarnath Temple

The temple itself lies at an elevation of 3600m on the flank of its namesake peak and at the foot of the Chorabari Glacier. The mountain Kedarath towers above the temple, with its near 7000m summit. These grand and exposed surroundings are in themselves worth visiting, and the temple adds a mystical quality to the powerful Himalayan vista.

Worth The Trek

Because of Kedarnath’s remote location, the temple is inaccessible by road. On foot, the temple is a tough 16km trek from Gaurikund. Gaurikund is itself a site of pilgrimage in the Hindu tradition and acts as a base camp for those who wish to push on to Kedarnath. The trek can become easy on ponies, which you can hire from Sonprayag, a further 4km south of Gaurikund. And, for those who wish to make the journey in the ultimate style, helicopter rides are available from Phata. The unique journey by helicopter affords the traveler an incredible bird’s eye view of the valley.
